Reformatting and doing a clean install of windows

Postby Fettered » Fri Aug 01, 2014 6:24 am

So I have been trying to take some old PC parts and Frankenstein a media PC out of them. Everything runs and works, but it seems like I can't get most of the stuff off of this harddrive for this computer. I'd like to just format it and do a clean install of windows, but I don't have any of the original software. I can get a windows disc, but it'll be a new one and not the one that came with the system. Is it possible to just format the harddrive and use the windows disc as a boot disc?

Yeah run off the disc long enough to do a new install of windows.

The windows discs are self booting. Boot from CD. BUT make sure you have the code.

Cool I thought they were self booting, but it has been years since I've had to use or make a boot disc, so I didn't know if they still worked that way.

you don't make a boot disk anymore go into your bios and select your cd/dvd drive as primary boot device and save exit then restart :)

Or watch your screen bios when booting. It will sometimes say press F12 or whatever for boot screen. That will let you boot from any of your devices.

the disk/cd/usb stick you are booting to still has to contain bootcode and enough executeable code to run a minimum system and file system

And yes, you will need a license key if doing a fresh install to a reformatted disk.
