Ship Names

Postby jaustin89 » Sat Feb 01, 2014 2:20 am

I'm not really a roleplay person but these ships just beg for proper names, anyone else got a list?

Constellation - Rocinante
Retaliator - Saxum Tarpeium
Starfarer - Corocotta
Gladiator - Sparticus
350R - Nike
M50 - Argus
Super Hornet - Deimos, Phobos
Aroura LX - Eclipse
Aroura LN - Carpenter
Avenger - Mjolner
Freelancer - Camillus
Idris P - Themis
Cutlass - Sulla
Merlin - Buteo Ala
Caterpillar - Khannible
Khartu - Solar Twin
Merchant Man - Xanthippus

and should I ever get one

Scythe - Alaric

And since I'm bored the first person to get all the references in that list will get a SC gift card.

So far I've only named one ship, my first and my favorite. My Freelancer is "The Sacred Chao".

The only one I'd got so far was based off the types of ship names you found in Ian M. Banks' Culture novels.

So my Retaliator was going to be called "They Started It"

Ah yes, names... I find it very hard to name ships or anything really.

What I do is start with a list of my ships and as names pop into my head I put names next to the ship and then keep updating or adding additional names as I think of them. Usually they start out as pretty general names and slowly morph into more exotic or clever names.

I do have three ships that I have locked the names to.

Idris-P - Alexandria (named by my sweetie)
Constellation ( not sure which variant yet) - Pandamonium (yes, with panda at the beginning. This is named after a SL ship I had)
Retaliator - Valkyrie (named after the good/bad guys ship in Titan AE because that is what the ship reminds me of)

I have a lot of ships and naming is proving to be quite the interesting challenge. :)

In Star Wars games (SWG) I've always given my ships Mandalorian names, but since that doesn't work here my ship names are likely tentative.

I'm also not sure if they are going to be given some sort of designation like Star Trek or not, the lore builder numbering hasn't had much to say about civilian (non UEE military) ships that I've seen.

That being said I'll probably go with a Norse theme

Avenger: Sleipnir (Odin's eight legged horse)
Constellation: Leif the Lucky (after Leif Erikson) If I can paint the Merlin I'll paint it Red and call it Erik
Cutlass: Eir (Valkyrie associated with medicine and rescue)
Hornet: Fenrir (monstrous wolf child of Loki)

If I get a Herald: Huginn or Muninn (Odin's Ravens who carry the news)
If I get an 890: Valhalla (because the mead and food will flow)
If I get the gunship from TNGSS contest: Jormungandr (the world serpent)

The only ship that I might get that won't have a Norse theme is the Idris. She'll be known as The Oncoming Storm.

Well, lets see. My 325a is "Obsidian", inspired by the dark paint job and elegant appearance.

My Super Hornet was originally going to be "Ares", after the Greek god of war, but I instead went with "Athena", who is also associated with warfare, but as strategy and defense as opposed to Ares' association with the killing aspect of war.

Since I plan to outfit my Connie as a fighter killer, I went with "Shrike", after the bird of prey that catches and skewers small flying insects.

Lastly, my crown jewel, my Retaliator, is "Thundersword", which is a long running name for my heavy assault craft. It was originally inspired by the name of the heavy bomber from Tribes 2, and was also the name of my beloved custom B-Wing in SWG: Jump to Light Speed.

If I get a 315p, it'll probably be "Onyx" (to go along with the "Obsidian"), while a Gladiator will probably be "Death Choir" (after the devastating attack performed by Mass Effect 2's Praetorians). I'm still not sure on names if I get an Aurora or Avenger. I really do need to think up a name for an 890 as well. I might go with the name of my yacht from SWG, "Star Clipper". I'll ponder that one. I may also need to wait until I can see what it looks like.

Ah! I have a name for my Constellation now: Eponymous. (It's named after itself.)

If I get an 890 Jump I may fill it with artworks and name it "Hieronymous".
